Extra Maths & Science Tuition, FET Phase

The Academy is the high school division of Axon Education. We are a tutoring academy: we teach Mathematics and Physical Science to learners in the FET phase, in small groups, on a fixed weekly timetable, with tutors who hold degrees in the subjects they teach.

Three programmes sit on one ladder. Advanced Programme Further Studies runs across the FET phase. The Grade 11 Olympiad identifies the country's strongest mathematical talent in the second year of that phase. Matric Intervention prepares learners in the final year for the final examination.

A learner enters at the start of the FET phase and remains with the same tutors until matric. Admission is by diagnostic assessment. The assessment is free, and it determines placement — it is not a formality.

Axon Scholars are taught to think independently, to work consistently, and to finish what they begin. Those are the habits that carry a learner through university and into professional life.

How We Teach

The Academy teaches in small groups, on a fixed timetable, with subject specialists. Every Scholar is assessed on entry, tracked every term, and reported on to the parent and the partner school.

Small-Group Tutoring

Classes are capped at 15 Scholars. Every learner is seen, heard, and corrected in every session.

Subject-Specialist Tutors

Every tutor holds a degree in the subject they teach and is trained in the Axon method. Tutors are accountable for the progress of each Scholar in their group.

Weekly Contact Hours

The timetable is fixed. Scholars attend weekly sessions in Mathematics and Physical Science, with additional holiday programmes, mock examinations, and individual remediation.

In Person & Online

Teaching takes place at partner schools and Axon venues, supported online between sessions for revision, past papers, and assessment.

Diagnostic Tracking

Every Scholar is assessed on entry and at the end of each term. Progress is measured against individual targets and reported to the Scholar, the parent, and the partner school.

Structured Materials

The Academy supplies the workbooks, past-paper packs, revision modules, and examination-technique guides. All materials are aligned to the NSC and AP syllabi.

Advanced Programme — Further Studies

A three-year Further Studies curriculum in Mathematics and Physical Science, beginning at the start of the FET phase and concluding at matric.

The Advanced Programme extends beyond the NSC. It teaches the reasoning that engineering, actuarial science, computer science, and the physical sciences require at university level. It is taught in small groups, by subject specialists, on a fixed weekly timetable.

How it runs:

  • Small groups of no more than 15 Scholars
  • Weekly classes after school, with holiday revision
  • AP Mathematics and AP Science examinations written alongside NSC papers
  • Free diagnostic assessment before placement

Minimum academic requirements:

  • Senior Phase exit mark of 80% or higher in Mathematics
  • Senior Phase exit mark of 75% or higher in Natural Sciences
  • Recommendation from the school's Mathematics or Science department
  • Successful completion of the Axon diagnostic assessment
  • Commitment to the full three-year programme (the FET phase)

Scholars who complete the programme write AP Mathematics and AP Science examinations alongside their NSC papers. The result is a competitive position for university admission, and a direct route into the Axon Fellowship.

Grade 11 Olympiad

A national three-stage competition in Mathematics and Physical Science for learners in the second year of the FET phase.

The Olympiad identifies the learners who reason like engineers and scientists before they reach matric. It is administered in three stages of increasing demand, and it reports diagnostic results to schools as well as individual rankings.

How it runs:

  • Three stages across the year, each calibrated higher than the last
  • Stage One is written at partner schools by all entrants
  • Stage Two is a free-response assessment at regional hubs
  • Stage Three is a national final, marked by senior examiners from partner universities

Eligibility criteria:

  • Enrolment in the second year of the FET phase during the 2027 academic year
  • First-year FET final mark: minimum 75% in Mathematics
  • First-year FET final mark: minimum 70% in Physical Sciences
  • Nomination by a Mathematics or Physical Sciences educator
  • Availability for all three assessment stages

Outcomes: top performers are referred to partner university bursary programmes, admitted to the Axon Fellowship pathway, and entered onto the Axon STEM Honours Register — the institution's register of high-potential Scholars in the quantitative sciences.

Matric Intervention

A final-year FET programme in Mathematics and Physical Science, taught weekly from the first term to the final examination.

Matric Intervention serves two cohorts: learners who must lift a borderline result to a university pass, and learners working toward a distinction. Both are taught the same way — past papers every week, a mock examination every term, and a tutor who can name exactly where marks are being lost.

What the year includes:

  • Weekly revision classes across Terms 1 to 4
  • Holiday bootcamps in March, June, and September
  • Full mock examination cycles with diagnostic feedback
  • Individual remediation for weak areas
  • Examination technique, time management, and anxiety management
  • Direct support with university applications and NSFAS submissions

The programme is open to learners in the final year of the FET phase. It is designed to move borderline learners into university admission and to sharpen strong learners toward distinction-level results.

The Axon SMART Mindset

Across all three programmes, the Academy develops five qualities in every Scholar: Strategic, Masterful, Analytical, Resilient, and Transformative. They are taught deliberately, assessed every term, and carried into university and professional life.

S Strategic ▶
M Masterful ▶
A Analytical ▶
R Resilient ▶
T Transformative ▶

Strategic thinking is taught, not assumed. Scholars map their academic pathway from the start of the FET phase, choose subjects against their intended careers, and set targets that are reviewed each term. In the Advanced Programme, this means committing to a three-year pathway at the outset. In the Olympiad, it means preparing deliberately across three stages. In Matric Intervention, it means entering the final year with a week-by-week plan.

Strategic

Mastery is earned through deliberate, repeated practice. The Academy takes Scholars beyond surface understanding to genuine command of the subject. In the Advanced Programme, that means working through university-level Mathematics and Science while still at school. In the Olympiad, it means solving unfamiliar, multi-step problems under time pressure. In Matric Intervention, it means knowing every past paper, every formula, and every examination technique.

Masterful

Analytical reasoning is the foundation of every Academy programme. In the Advanced Programme, Scholars work with abstract mathematical reasoning, statistical analysis, and applied scientific method. In the Olympiad, they decompose complex problems under time pressure. In Matric Intervention, they break examination questions into their logical components. It is what separates a learner who memorises from a learner who understands.

Analytical

Resilience is the quality that decides outcomes at the margins. Scholars are taught to recover from a weak result, to persist through hard problems, and to maintain attendance when the year becomes difficult. In the Advanced Programme, resilience is staying the course for three years. In the Olympiad, it is returning stronger after a weak stage. In Matric Intervention, it is arriving at every session in the final term.

Resilient

The Academy is not built to produce good students alone. It is built to produce engineers, scientists, and founders. In the Advanced Programme, Scholars are equipped for university study in the quantitative sciences. In the Olympiad, they join a national network of top talent. In Matric Intervention, they take the first step into university and, eventually, into careers that change the country. Every Scholar is asked to become more than a candidate — to become a builder.

Transformative

Admission to the Academy

Admission begins with a diagnostic assessment. The assessment is free, and it determines placement.
